Causes of Yeast Infection
Ask any woman who has had a yeast infection why they got it and they seldom will know. She will likely know the signs and symptoms, she’ll know all about the discomfort this infection causes, and she probably knows how to cure a yeast infection. Men and women alike often know the cure for the current flare up, but to be able to cure yeast infections for life you really need to understand the causes. It goes with out saying that those who don’t understand this problem are doomed to get it again and again.
A yeast infection or Candida is simply an irritation of mucous membranes in the body, commonly affecting the vagina, intestines, skin or mouth. An infection causes swelling and irritation of the areas affected. The infection itself is simply an over-abundance of a fungus known as candidiasis. Thrush and vaginitis are also caused by this candida family of fungi.
What’s the real scoop on the causes of yeast infections?
To stop getting yeast infections, you must understand what causes them. Vulnerable areas of the body provide the candida fungus the opportunity to attack. Women taking antibiotics or steroid medications are often the major target of yeast infections. These medications make the vagina develop too much candida. Actually, candida is a fungus commonly found in the vagina; it’s only when the fungus explodes into an over-abundance that it causes a yeast infection. For some women they must use antibiotics and steroids to remain healthy. Women that need to take these medications will often take a yeast infection medication at the same time, especially if they are prone to getting yeast infections.
Another cause of yeast infections is wearing damp underclothing or swimsuits during hot weather. In warm damp environments, the candida fungus thrives. Everything Candida needs to flourish is provided by perspiration in the vaginal area or a damp swimsuit. To prevent yeast infections in hot, damp weather, change your underwear if it feels too damp, use wetness-absorbing powder in your underclothes, and change out of your swimsuit into dry clothing when you’re not swimming.
For women, another cause of yeast infections is clothing that is too tight. Vaginal irritation is caused by the clothing being too tight. Candida flourishes on the irritated vaginal skin. After the irritation, comes the start of the full-blown yeast infection. Women are advised to wear clothing that fits properly and forgo vanity for common sense.
Tight clothing is not the only source of irritations that cause yeast infections. Some bath products have been known to cause irritated skin and will start a woman on the path to a yeast infection. While these products may feel and smell pleasant, these things aren’t worth causing a yeast infection. If you know that certain bath products cause irritations in which candida thrives, simply avoid them. Many will suggest a milk-bath product that only contains a small amount of soap.
Lastly, it’s very important for women to not use douche products. Most physicians agree that using douches is not helpful or necessary for maintaining vaginal health. Nature will maintain your help and doesn’t need assistance from harsh douche products.
